Introducing new plans with AI Credits, so Raycast AI can work through longer tasks on its own.
Today, we're changing how Raycast AI is priced. Our plans are moving from rate-limited to usage-based, while all subscription prices stay the same. We're also introducing a new plan called Max at $50 per month for heavier usage. Raycast Pro subscribers can also connect their Claude and ChatGPT subscriptions for even more usage. Here's why we made these changes and what else is new.
When we added AI to Raycast in 2023, it was one question in and one answer out. It was easy to estimate usage, which allowed us to set a flat subscription price. That's changed. Today, you can give AI Chat a task, and it uses your extensions, writes and runs code, checks the results, and keeps going until it's finished. When something fails, it tries a different approach. And when it needs a decision from you, it stops, asks you, and then continues where it left off.
The cost of supporting these workflows has increased, while our subscription prices haven't. So far, we've been covering the difference, but we can't subsidize it the way the big model labs can, and it leaves less money for building Raycast itself.
Going forward, your subscription pays for the experience around the model, such as the chat and the extensions, alongside Cloud Sync, Dictation, and other Pro features we keep building. Running the model is a separate cost and you can now choose how to cover it.
If you'd rather watch than read, I walk through the changes in this video.
The easiest way to access dozens of different LLMs is through our plans. Each plan comes with a monthly allowance of AI Credits. The number of credits a task uses depends on the model and how much work gets done.
You can see your usage in the app and top up or upgrade when you need more. If you're on Pro today, you stay on Pro. Advanced AI becomes Pro+ at your next billing cycle. To ease the transition, every existing subscriber gets a bonus month of AI Credits.
From today, you can connect your Claude or ChatGPT account to any paid Raycast plan and use those models in AI Chat, Quick AI, and AI Commands. This lets you perform the heaviest tasks without worrying about additional costs. We plan to add other providers in the future to turn AI Chat into your single interface to get the most out of your subscriptions.
The same applies to your own API key, a custom provider, or a local model. Those now require a paid Pro plan. In those cases, you cover the model separately and your Raycast subscription covers the experience around it.
Our new pricing is what makes the rest of this release possible. We've been sitting on features that let AI work on its own, because there was no way to account for what they cost. Two of them ship today.
For work you repeat regularly, we added Automations. These run prompts on a schedule, so you don't have to start the same task yourself every time. The agent works in the background and adds the result to a chat.
Here's what our team runs:
To structure ongoing work, we added Projects. Projects keep conversations about the same topic together. They have their own memory so you don't have to explain yourself every time you start a new chat. The agent will also remember decisions you've made and build on your previous work.
You can also give a project a working directory. Point it at an Obsidian vault, a folder of invoices, or any other location on your Mac or PC, and the agent knows where to work with your files. In Raycast fashion, Projects show up in Root Search and you can assign a hotkey to jump straight into one.
Raycast has always been about getting things done quickly on your computer. AI is a big part of that now and these changes give us a sustainable way to keep building it.
